Skala Potamias

otamia is a traditional village in the northeast of Thassos Island, 12 km’s from Limenas (Thassos Town), the capital and main ferry port of the island, with a population of over 1000 people. Sitting in the foothills of the Ipsarion mountain range, below Mount Ipsarion (1206m).

Potamia takes its name from the Greek for river, there are many mountain brooks and streams crisscrossing the village. From Potamia you will find many trails and routes that take you into the interior of the island, a hiker’s paradise! Potamia is also the birthplace of Polignotos Vagis, a worldwide famous sculptor and artist, there is a museum dedicated to him in the village and is well worth a visit.

3 km away you will find Skala Potamia, the home of Hotel Kamelia and is the traditional harbour for Potamia. This picturesque port with its small harbour and fishing boats has a rich history which and was also used by the monks of Mount Athos during the 19th century. The Tarsanas building, now a cultural centre is one of the testaments to their time here. Skala Potamia has a huge selection of restaurants, taverns, bars and cafes to choose from and of course supermarkets and other shops and services.

Access & directions

Keramoti - Thassos - Skala Potamia

From the port of Keramoti, which is a 30 minute drive from Kavala, you can take a ferry boat to Limenas. During the summer months there is a ferry boat every half an hour and the journey takes 35 minutes. From Limenas head east for 13 km’s, you will pass Panagia and Potamia before reaching Skala Potamia and Hotel Kamelia (GPS 40.71104, 24.75842).

Kavala - Skala Prinos - Skala Potamia

This route takes you from Kavala ferry port to the port of Skala Prinos. From Skala Prinos it is a 35 km journey to Skala Potamia and Hotel Kamelia. Head east in the direction of Limenas, bypass Limenas and follow the directions as above.

By airplane

Kavala Airport (“Megas Alexandros Airport” - KVA) is the closest airport to Thassos Island. It can be found close to Kavala and Chrisoupoli and during the summer months has daily charter flights from all over Europe. Throughout the year there is a twice daily connection to Athens International Airport (“Eleftherios Venizelos” - ATH). From the airport to the ferry port at Keramoti is a 17 km journey and can be made by taxi or if you prefer you can arrange to rent a car from the airport, several international and local car hire companies offer their services from the airport.

Thessaloniki International Airport (“Macedonia International Airport” - SKG) is 15 km’s SE of Thessaloniki city centre and has regular scheduled and charter flights arriving mainly from Europe. During the last few years the airport has benefitted from many budget airlines which give travellers both economy flights and independence.
To get from Thessaloniki Airport to Thassos Island, you have some choices. You can hire a car from the airport, the journey to either Kavala or Keramoti for the ferry boat should be a leisurely and enjoyable 2 to two and a half hour drive. The route is well sign-posted and once you are on the Odos Ignatia (E90) you holiday begins! The second choice is to take a coach from the KTEL bus station but first you must either take a taxi (20 minutes and less than 25 Euros) or bus number 78/78N (40 minutes to one hour and less than 1 Euro) to the KTEL Terminus. The Thessaloniki to Kavala coach service runs every hour on the hour and has an express service which does not stop and has a journey time of 2 hours. The normal coach stops in several villages along the route and takes 2.5 hours. Finally you can take a taxi from Thessaloniki Airport to either Kavala or Keramoti, this can be expensive but many tourists take advantage of this service.
Once you arrive in Kavala you can either take the ferry to Skala Prinos, Thassos (depending on the time of day) or relax in one of the many hotels in the city and take the early ferry the next morning.
